Percussion Caption Head
Miles Denny is an Arizona native. While attending Arizona State for his BM, Miles Studied under JB Smith, Mark Sunkett, Simone Mancuso, Joe Perez, Roberto Paz, and John McClean. Currently Miles is the Director of Bands at Basha High School in Chandler AZ. He also works with Vision Indoor Percussion as the Battery Coordinator and Tenor tech. This will be his first year with Phenom Drum & Bugle Corps as the Percussion Caption Head. Miles is excited to help foster a new level of excellence with Phenom in their first season of Open Class competition. In his free time miles enjoys spending time with his wife Libby and Dog Titan.
David Gronneberg is currently Associate Director of Bands at Flower Mound High School in Flower Mound, Texas. Prior to his appointment at Flower Mound, he served as the Director of Percussion for the Grain Valley School District from 2008 – 2019. At Grain Valley, he directed three high school percussion ensemble classes; the Marching Eagles Drumline; chamber ensembles; and 6th, 7th, and 8th grade percussion classes.
Under his direction, the GVHS Percussion Ensemble and Drumline garnered national acclaim for both their performance quality and professionalism. The Grain Valley Marching Eagles have earned multiple AA Division Championship awards and Finalist placements at the BOA St. Louis Super Regional. In 2016, the Marching Eagles were honored to perform at the 90th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Under Mr. Gronneberg’s direction, the Grain Valley HS Percussion Ensemble was selected to perform at the Music for All National Percussion Festival in 2015 and 2019. Additionally, the Percussion Ensemble was selected as the 2017 Missouri Music Educator’s Convention Honor Chamber Ensemble.
Mr. Gronneberg earned his Master of Arts in Music Education from the University of Central Missouri and his Bachelor of Music Education from Missouri State University. He also spent the summers of 2004, 2005, and 2006 as a member of the Madison Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps. Mr. Gronneberg taught the WGI World Class Drumline Gateway Indoor from 2008 – 2012.
Mr. Gronneberg is the immediate Past President for the Missouri Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society and he is an Educational Artist for Innovative Percussion. David Gronneberg currently lives in Texas with his wife, Heather, and his amazing daughter, Lena.
Kent Summerour is a seasoned marching band designer, clinician, and adjudicator. He is known for his unique approach and creativity in show production and design. Kent understands the nuance of blending the elements of the music and visual to create an outstanding effect.
Since 2001, Kent has worked with marching bands, winter guards, and indoor drum lines. Using these show designs, bands and groups have competed at the Texas State Marching Contest, BOA, US Bands, TECA, TCGC and WGI finals...and some have gone to finals for the first time!
For much of the performance seasons, Kent spends his time traveling the country as an active clinician and adjudicator.
Kent is also the co-inventor and co-developer of the Field Dots system (www.fielddots.com), a system for learning drill more efficiently and accurately.
Kent currently resides in Dallas with his beautiful wife, Pia, and their two daughters Maya and Aurora.
Mr. King is currently in his 28th year as an independent music educator, arranger, consultant, and performer with a specialization in marching percussion. Mr. King is currently the percussion caption head/arranger for Desert Ridge, Red Mountain, Campo Verde, Mountain View and Millennium High Schools in Arizona.
Mr. King also serves as the Executive Director / Caption Head of Vision Percussion Indoor Drumline (PIO). Mr. King has previously served as caption head/arranger/clinician for various other high schools in the state of Arizona. Mr. King also has served as the marching percussion specialist at Northern Arizona University and The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps.
As the owner of King Percussion LLC, “Championship Concepts For Percussion,” Mr. King has worked with groups in Arizona, California, New Hampshire, Nevada, and Kentucky in both the marching and indoor percussion arenas. In his twenty-eight years as an adjudicator and percussion designer/instructor, he has worked with more than 25 different percussion programs at the high school, college, and drum corps levels. As a creative percussion arranger, Wardell’s percussion writing is designed to closely integrate concert and marching percussion techniques to enhance all components of the musical score. Wardell has a strong teaching philosophy guided to offer life lessons through music and dedicated practice.
Excelling educationally and competitively in both the local and national circuit, Mr. King is in high demand as an educator and clinician. He provides both rudimental and drum set lessons to students of all ages and educational backgrounds.
With extensive studies in the jazz arts, Mr. King is part of the W Quartet, who continue to play for audiences around the Phoenix Area.
Dakota McConnell is a percussionist and educator from Casa Grande, Arizona. Dakota is an alumni of The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps where he marched from 2014-2017, leading the section in ‘15 and ‘17. Dakota also marched with Pulse Percussion in the 2017 and in 2018 led the group to a 4th place finish. Dakota has a Bachelor of Arts from ASU in interdisciplinary studies with concentrations in business and economics.
Dakota has taught Casa Grande Percussion Ensemble since fall 2016 , taught with The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps in 2018 and currently teaches with Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps. In addition he also serves as the Director and Battery Arranger at Flux Indoor Percussion from Casa Grande, Arizona.
Dakota has learned from, but not limited to, Glen Crosby, Ike Jackson, John Mapes, Cisco Hance, Rick Barclay, Ryan Anderson, Ezekiel Lanser, Connor Yasuda, Drew Guy, Will Edmonds, Stevie Hagel, and John Sutton.
John Mcclean, an Arizona native is the founder of Percussion IQ along side Matt Regua. John has been teaching in the Valley for multiple years with groups such as Arizona State University 2013-2016, ASU world 2013, Desert Vista HS 2003-2004, Maryvale HS 2005-2006, Basha HS 2007-2012.
John has had many years of DCI and WGI experience including, the Troopers, Esperanza, The Blue Devils, Momentum Indoor, and ASU World Indoor. Aside from competitive drumming John has experience in the entertainment side with PHX Percussion (Suns Drumline) and Arizona Cardinals "Big Red Thunder".
In his free time John enjoys Golfing, Stock Trading, Working out, Reading, and Cooking.
Sam Esparza is a 4 time Emmy Award winning Sound Designer/Mixer for Film and Television. He is Co-owner of Big U Music Sound Design, Arizona’s most established Audio Post and Music Production Company, producing music and sound for clients like Arizona Diamondbacks, Phoenix Suns, Casino Arizona, ASU, Disney, HBO, Warner Brothers, NBC Universal, and many others.
Sam is also an Educator, as Adjunct Faculty at Scottsdale Community College in both the Film School, and the School of Music, teaching Film Sound and Electronic Music. He is also a Guest Lecturer at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, where he also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Television Production.
Additionally, Sam is heavily involved in the Marching Arts, currently as Sound Designer and Sound Mixer for both the Barry Goldwater Pride Regiment and Arizona State University Sun Devil Marching Band. He is also a Sound Designer/Editor for World, Independent, and Scholastic WGI Winter Guards across Arizona and California including Barry Goldwater, Corona Del Sol, Highland, Diamond Bar, and Fenix. Sam also consults and lectures on the subject of Sound Technology in Music Education/Marching Arts for organizations AMEA, ABODA, AZMBA and WGAZ.
Sam is married to his high school sweetheart, who of course he met in band, Renee Young-Esparza. He is also Cat Daddy to 4 monochromatic rescue cats, Little Jerry Seinfeld, Baby Kat, Chow Chow, and Denny.
Joseph has played tenors for Basha High School ('06-'10), Velvet Knights Drum and Bugle Corps ('08-'09), Sun Devil Marching Band ('12), Arizona State University Indoor Percussion Ensemble ('13), and Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps ('13). He has taught at Basha High School, Casa Grande High School, Gilbert High School, Mountain Ridge High School, Williamsfield High School, and Arizona State University.
Currently, Joseph teaches at Basha High School and performs with BOOM! Percussion Entertainment. For Joseph, the most rewarding part of teaching is seeing the growth of his students as musicians and as people.
Cole was born and raised in Gilbert, Arizona. He is currently teaching at Corona Del Sol High School and also works with Flux indoor percussion as a visual designer and battery staff. Cole is an alumni of Arizona State University where he received a bachelor's in Clinical Psychology.
Cole's marching experience includes ASU Sun Devil Marching Band, Breakthrough Indoor Percussion, POW Percussion, The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps, Pacific Crest, and RCC Indoor Percussion. He has also performed with the Cardinals Drumline and BOOM! Percussion. This is his first year with Phenom and is excited for the opportunity to continue growing Arizona.
Ricky Barrera is an Arizona percussion educator with 8 years of experience in marching percussion. He has marched snare with groups such as; Mesa High, Breakthrough indoor 2013-16, Arizona state marching band 2015-16 and POW Percussion 2017.
He has taught various ensembles around the state. Some of the groups include: Westwood HS, Saguaro HS, Hamilton HS and Mesa HS. Ricky also teaches lessons and gives clinics across the valley. Ricky is excited to return to Phenom as a battery instructor.
Anthony Cortez is an active performer and educator from Mesa, Arizona. Anthony has been a part of Arizona’s marching percussion scene having marched 3 seasons with Breakthrough Percussion (15-17) and 2 seasons with Arizona State’s SDMB. Along with that, he has toured 2 seasons with the Oregon Crusaders (17-18) and has most recently been a part of WGI World Finalist ensemble Dark Sky Percussion (18-19).
Anthony is currently an avid instructor in the East Valley, working with Gilbert High School and Breakthrough Percussion along with Phenom Drum & Bugle Corps.
Kevin has been working with the marching percussion groups at Basha and Mountain View High Schools as well as Vision Indoor Percussion. Past schools he has spent his time with are: Desert Ridge, Skyline, Perry, and Desert Vista High School. He has recently gained clinician experience with Paz Music and Red Oak High School in Texas. Other previous experience includes a position as Bass Technician with the Oregon Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps. This will be his first year alongside the students and staff of Phenom Drum & Bugle Corps and he couldn't be more optimistic about the direction of the organization.
His performance experience includes several seasons of WGI and DCI, in groups like Arizona State University, The Blue Knights, and The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps. Kevin has benefit from renown instructors such as Ralph Hardimon and Mike McIntosh.
A graduate of Highland High School, Kevin currently resides in Tempe, AZ, and is pursuing a degree in Software Engineering from Arizona State University. In his spare time, he enjoys studying photography and videography, drinking specialty espresso, and listening to rap and hip-hop.

Juan José Oliveros Saldaña is an alumni of Arizona State University where he received a BFA in Studio Arts with a focus in Painting.
Along with being an independent Artist and Designer, Juan is currently a Front Ensemble instructor at Basha High School and Flux Indoor Percussion. He has previous experience as an instructor with Casa Grande High School, Campo Verde High School, and Mesa High School.

Travis Rowland holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance-Percussion from Arizona State University under Dr. J.B. Smith, Shaun Tilburg, Dom Moio, and Simone Mancuso. Travis’ other teachers and influences include Dr. Mark Eichenberger, Joseph Goglia, Matt Watson, and Ali Salcedo.
Travis’ marching experience includes The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps in 2016 on xylophone and Breakthrough Indoor in 2017 on marimba. Travis is excited to join the percussion educational team at Phenom Drum & Bugle Corps.
Front Ensemble Staff
Shane is a front ensemble educator from Chandler, AZ. He is currently working on his Associate of Arts from Mesa Community College and will be transferring to Ottawa University next fall to finish his music education degree. While at MCC, he has performed with the Community Band, Community Orchestra, Concert Band, Latin Jazz Combo, Jazz Rock Fusion Combo, and Percussion Ensemble. He has had the opportunity to study under Chris Reidy, Robby Carrillo, and Michael King.
Shane’s marching experience includes Gold Drum and Bugle Corps (2016-17), Vision Indoor Percussion (2016-18), and Vessel Indoor Percussion (2019-20). He has worked with eight high school programs across the valley as a front ensemble instructor as well as serving as a clinician to several more. He currently works with Perry High School and is the front ensemble caption head for Phoenix Union Indoor. Shane is very excited for his first season with Phenom and teaching drum corps!
