Mellanie Risch

Color Guard Caption Head

Mellanie began her color guard career at Mountain Pointe High School in Phoenix, AZ. She went on to perform with The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps Color Guard, The Academy Winter Guard and FeniX Independent Winter Guard. At Arizona State University, Mellanie performed with the ASU Color Guard and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Studies. Over the years, Mellanie has worked with many programs including The Academy Youth Guard, Perry High School, Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps, and Phenom in 2019.

 

Mellanie continues to be heavily involved with the color guard activity. She currently serves as Event Host Coordinator on the Winter Guard Arizona (WGAZ) executive board, and is the President of the Arizona Academy Alumni Association. She is the Color Guard Director at Mountain View High School in Mesa, AZ and has called this program her home for 12 years.  This fall, she is also working with Coolidge High School and Mesa High School and is currently in her 7th year on staff with the Arizona State University Marching Band Color Guard. This winter, Mellanie will be returning to the staff of FeniX Independent Winterguard for her 7th year.

 

When Mellanie is not in rehearsal, you can find her working for the Creative and Performing Arts Department Mesa Public Schools, at her home in Mesa, AZ with her husband and beautiful daughter.

Kalyla Foster

Color Guard Staff

Kalyla Foster currently resides in Phoenix, Arizona. Kalyla performed for 3 years as part of The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps, and aged out at Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps in 2019. She is currently a member of the Arizona State University Color Guard as one of their captains. Kalyla is about to enter her sixth season as a member of FeniX Independent World, also as one of their captains. She has had a wonderful time performing, but is very excited to teach the next generation of color guard members.

 

Kalyla has taught color guard at various high schools in the valley from 2016 to the present. She currently teaches at Millennium High School and Canyon View High School. She spends almost all of her free time both spinning and teaching color guard. She is very excited to work with Phenom this summer and can’t wait to see the growth of the organization.

Reid Scholz

Color Guard Staff

Reid grew up in Ashburn, Virginia where he fell in love with the marching arts while in high school. He has had the opportunity to grow and develop his love and passion for the activity at several programs across the mountain west.

 

Reid has performed with Wasatch independent, is currently a performer with Fenix independent from ASU and has taught at several organizations including The Battalion Drum Corps from Salt Lake City Utah, Westlake High school (UT), Copper Hills High School (UT), and is the show designer and program coordinator for Salem Hills High School (UT). Reid currently works as the color guard director at Millennium High School and Canyon View High School here in the Phoenix area. 

 

Reid is excited to join the Phenom Phamily and grow alongside amazing educators and performers.

Brooklyn Jorgensen

Color Guard Staff

Brooklyn Jorgensen has been involved in the color guard community for 11 years and actively teaching for 7. Her field of strength is in movement, and is currently obtaining her Bachelor’s degree in Dance Education at Arizona State University.

 

While attending school, she also teaches movement for the Corona del Sol high school color guard and the Arizona State University color guard. Brooklyn has also marched with FeniX Independent World during the winter season in recent past years.

 

As her first year on staff with Phenom, she looks forward to diving into the drum corps world and guiding the members into moving more diverse, authentically, and intentionally.

Mackenzie O'Toole

Color Guard Staff

Mackenzie is a color guard instructor from Gilbert, Arizona. She is the current color guard Caption Head at Perry High School, and has seven years of marching experience. After graduating from Gilbert High School, she went on to spend one season with Arizona State’s Sun Devil Marching Band (2017), three years with FeniX Independent (2017-2019), and one season with the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps (2019). 

 

Mackenzie has taught at several schools across the valley besides Perry, such as Mountain Pointe High School, McClintock High School, and Gilbert High School. This will be her first year on staff with Phenom Drum & Bugle Corps, and she is very excited to continue aiding the growth of this activity in Arizona!

Jacob Zimpfer

Color Guard Staff

Jacob Zimpfer started his colorguard journey in 2014 as a freshman at Corona del Sol High School in Tempe, Arizona. Ever since his initial start, he had fallen in love with the activity and has always made an effort to be a part of it.

 

He has had the opportunity to be a member of the Santa Clara Vanguard from 2018 to 2021 as well as FeniX Indepedent Winterguard from 2019-2020. He then took his skills to begin his teaching journey at Gilbert High School and now currently teaches at Perry High School as a technician and choreographer.

 

In his time away from the activity, Jacob is a shift supervisor at Starbucks and is currently attending Arizona State University. He is pursuing two BA’s in Communication and Psychology with a focus in interpersonal and intercultural studies.

Kim Beaird

Color Guard Staff

Kim Beaird has been with Phenom since the 2019 season and brings a lot of enthusiasm to the program. Her mission in life is to help young people find themselves using the marching arts as a platform to do so.

 

Her experience includes marching in independent winter programs and directing guards for much of Northern Arizona since 2010. Notably, she created and developed the Granite Mountain Winter Guard, a winter marching program that combines two major high schools in the Prescott/Prescott Valley area.  A long time Arizona resident, she loves all things Southwest and looks forward to representing the members of Phenom.
